Bridgeport, Conn.-Newcomer, junior Leandro Avila (Panama City, Panama) scored both of his team's goals to help lift the University of Bridgeport men's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference home win over the visiting Franklin Pierce University Raven at Knights Field on Saturday night. Bridgeport is now 2-1-0 on the young 2018 season, and FPU slips to 1-3-0 overall.
Avila netted his first goal of the night with 26:50 gone in the match when her rocketed home a flick from senior Goncalo Mendes (Vila do Conde, Portugal) to the top corner of the Ravens' net.
Franklin Pierce would tie the match at 1-1 on a UB own goal just under 10 minutes later when a cross from Bastian Thormeier was mistakenly headed into the Purple Knights' net by a Bridgeport player.
With the game tied at one, Leandro scored the game-winning goal just 2:48 into the second half when he collected a beautiful through ball from freshman Tom Godden (Leeds, England) and raced past the FPU defense and beat goalkeeper Jadel Poon-Lewis.
Avila's brace gives him a team-leading four goals through three contests.
UB goalkeeper Daniel Coviella (Sr., Ribadesella, Spain) made two saves to earn the win in net.
Up next, the Bridgeport men's soccer team will open 2018 East Coast Conference play on Tuesday night when the Purple Knights host Molloy College at 7:00 p.m.
