Volleyball's Hernandez and Tomiello Named to D2CCA's All-East Region Team
Hernandez voted to the first team while Tomiello slotted to the second team.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – In acknowledgement of terrific seasons for the University of Bridgeport's volleyball team, Paola Hernandez and Lucia Tomiello have been selected to the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) All-East Region Team. Hernandez, a senior, was named to the first team while Tomiello, a junior, was slotted to the second team.
Athletic communications staff from each of the institutions in the East Region, which is comprised of schools in the Northeast-10 Conference, East Coast Conference, and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, nominated and voted on the winners.
Hernandez, the CACC Player of the Year, led the conference in kills per set (3.56) during the regular season while hitting an efficient .215 across more than 1,000 total attempts. She also led the conference in total points won (453) and points per set (4.1).
In addition to the offensive numbers, Hernandez eclipsed 275 total digs this season which amounts to 2.49 per set. She finished with a team-high 12 double-doubles, including a 20-kill, 20-dig performance in a win over Jefferson on Oct. 26. Hernandez also ranked third on the team with 38 service aces this year.
Tomiello, who served as UB's most efficient player this fall, made the CACC's All-Conference First Team after ranking fourth in the league in hitting percentage (.350). That only tells half the story, however, as Tomiello's 631 total attempts are 155 more than any of the players ahead of her in the rankings. The native of Italy hit .400 or better in 10 matches this season and reached double-digit kills in 14 contests. She also ranked second on the team in service aces (39).
Defensively, Tomiello led the Purple Knights in both total blocks (48.5) and solo blocks (20). She tallied season highs in kills (17), digs (6) and solo blocks (3) in a five-set win over Jefferson on Oct. 26.
