AMHERST, Mass. – A pair of UB's track and field student-athletes took part in the UMass Multi's Meet on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Sophomore John Panzera competed in the decathlon while graduate student Anna-Mae Nellis made her mark in the heptathlon.
Panzera put together a considerable improvement from his performance in the same meet last season. The sophomore tallied 467 more points than he did a year ago en route to a fifth-place finish (5769 pts.).
Amongst the standout efforts was a PR in the discus in which he rattled off a mark of 30.11m. Panzera notched the best score in the high jump as well with a 1.89m.
Panzera's two days also included a third-place effort in the 110-hurdles (15.80) and fifth-place finishes in both the javelin (43.60m) and pole vault (3.60m).
On the women's side, it was Nellis posting the best finish amongst all non-DI competitors. The Poughkeepsie, N.Y. native ended up in ninth place with 3,669 total points.
Impressively, Nellis finished with the longest scores in both throwing events. She registered a new PR of 11.66m in the shot put while recording a top mark of 36.28m in the javelin.
Nellis also maneuvered a season-best time in the hurdles (17.55) which was good for 10th place.
