UB Swimmers Race Past The Competition At Friday's SCSU Double Dual Meet
Purple Knights Right Back In Action At Connecticut College On Saturday
New Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming team opened a busy weekend of action on Friday afternoon by traveling today to Southern Connecticut State University to face perennial NE 10 Conference Champion and host SCSU Owls plus the College of Saint Rose in a pair of double dual meets. Both UB squads emerged victorious with the men's team continuing undefeated in dual meet competition at 6-0; while the women improved to an impressive 5-1 record.
After a slow start in the opening relays, both UB squads soon took charge of the action. Freshman Margo Koets (Minster-on-Sea, England ) finished second in the women's 1,000 free, junior Erik Hren (Maribor, Slovenia) continued his winning ways, claiming the top spots in both the men's 1,000 and 500 yard freestyles and leading off the victorious 200 freestyle relay to close out the meet, followed by senior, team captain Klavio Meca (Tirana, Albania), finishing second in both events.
Newcomer Mariia Rezhylo (Kiev, Ukraine) captured three races on Friday, winning the women's 50 yard freestyle, the 100 yard butterfly and the 100 yard breaststroke races.
Senior women's team captain Nina Stegu (Ljublijana, Slovenia) won both the 200 and 100 yard freestyles while also leading off the victorious 200 yard freestyle relay.
Back on the men's side, junior Juan Patino (Cali, Columbia) captured both the 50 and 100 yard sprint races with classmate Leonard Posa (Zrenjanin, Serbia) taking third in the 50 Free, as well as second in the 100 yard breaststroke. Freshman Djordje Spasic (Belgrade, Serbia) and senior Juan David Mafla (Cali, Columbia) finished second and third in the 200 freestyle respectively, plus Spasic also grabbed second in the 100 free.Sophomore Kosta Mitrovic (Belgrade, Serbia) won the 100 Breaststroke on Friday.
Senior Clara Mico Gonzalez (Madrid, Spain) finished second in the women's 200 yard IM, and graduate student Nick Semenov (Kiev, Ukraine) won the men's 200 IM with sophomore Jose Javato (Cceres, Spain 0 finishing in second in the same event.
Senior Brian Kelly (Mahwah, N.J.) finished second in the men's 100 butterfly and third in the 100 yard backstroke, and teammate, senior Wilmar Du Plessis (Bloemfontein, South Africa ) captured the 100 yard backstroke.
The freshman tandem of Diana Naglic (Muta, Slovonia) and Margo Koets finished one-two in the women's 500 yard freestyle, and to wrap the afternoon up, both UB 200 yard freestyles were victorious.
On Saturday at 1:00 p.m., both teams will close out the 2018-19 dual meet season with a trip to New London, Connecticut where the women will compete in another double dual competition versus host Connecticut College and highly-regarded Assumption College from Worcester, Massachusetts; while the men will finish up with a dual meet vs Conn. College
