Purple Knights Compete At BU Terrier Swimming Inviational
Annagrazia Bonsanti And Nina Stegu Shine For The UB Women
Boston, Mass.-Both the University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming teams took part in the Boston University Terrier Invitational this weekend from Friday through Sunday. The UB men amassed a total of 262.5 points to take fifth place, and the Bridgeport women finished in eighth place with a total of 127 points. The Purple Knights were the only NCAA Division II team to compete in the meet, as all of the other schools were NCAA Division I programs.
Highlights on the men's side from the weekend in individual events were junior Wilmar Du Plessis (Bloemfontein, South Africa) winning the 200 Yard Back in a time of 1:48.45, and standout sophomore Erik Hren (Maribor, Slovenia) took three second place places finishing runner-up in the 1650 Yard Free (15:41.35), the 500 Yard Free (4:27.59) and the 200 Yard Free (1:39.68). Du Plessis also finished tied for fourth in the 100 Yard back in a time of 49.72, and freshman Kosta Mitrovic (Belgrade, Serbia) took second place in the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:00.45) plus sophomore Leonard Posa (Zrenjanin, Serbia) was fourth in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (57.06).
The UB Men's 800 Yard Free Relay team of Du Plessis, Hren plus junior Nick Semenov (Kiev, Ukraine) and junior Juan David Mafla (Cali, Columbia) took third place in their event with a time of 6:49.14.
On the women's side, senior Annagrazia Bonsanti (Caracas, Venezuela) and junior Nina Stegu (Ljublijana, Slovenia) had excellent weekends, as Bonsanti took second place in the 1650 Yard Free (17:01.29( and sixth place in the 500 Yard Freestyle (5:01.21), and Stegu scored point in three events taking second in the 200 Yard Free (1:51.50), third in 50 Yard Free (23.61) and sixth in the 100 Yard Free (51.83).
After taking a break for Thanksgiving, the UB swimming teams will be back in the water from December 1 through 3 at ECAC Winter Championship Meet to be held on Long Island at East Meadow, N.Y.
