Women's Soccer Bests Southern Connecticut State, 3-1, For First Win Of 2023

Rindge, N.H.-A late first half goal by newcomer Brooke Boucher (Jr., Harrow, Canada) turned out to be the game-winning tally, as the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team picked up its first win of 2023, as the Purple Knights defeated the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University, 3-1, in a match played in Rindge, New Hampshire on the campus of Franklin Pierce University.  The victory evens UB's season mark at 1-1-0, and SCSU is now 0-1-1.

The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the match in the 21st minute when Kat Mancione put home a rebound for the first goal of the afternoon.

Bridgeport tied the game at 1-1 with 7:44 to play in the opening half when senior Vivien Ruettgers (Munich, Germany) hammered home a penalty kick, and the Boucher would give her side a 2-1 lead when she slotted a beautiful shot to the low right corner of the SCSU net following a crossfield pass from classmate Jayven Howarth Colorado Springs, Colo.).

The Purple Knights iced the match away when junior Kate Thill (Goetzingen, Luxembourg) scored her first goal of the season off a breakaway with just 3:38 tplay in the match off a long through ball from senior Zahra Quannass (Quincy, Mass.)

Bridgeport goalkeeper Angelina Griva (Fr., Zakynthos, Greece) had a strong game between the pipes for the winners making eight saves.  The Owls outshot the Purple Knights, 15-9.

Up next, the UB women's soccer team will play its home opener and start a four-match homestand on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. when the Purple Knights host the Hawks of St. Anselm in a rematch of a 2022 NCAA East Regional Tournament contest.
