Hooksett, N.H.-The host Southern New Hampshire Penmen raced out to a 2-0 halftime lead and held on for a 3-2 non-conference women's soccer win over the visiting University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on Wednesday night in the Granite State. The loss UB snaps the team's seven-match winning streak and nine-match unbeaten streak, as the Purple Knights are now 11-4-1 overall. SNHU moves to 13-3-1 overall.
Trailing 2-0 at the half, UB junior Maegen Doyle (Harwich, England) cut the lead in half when she netted her team-best 18 goal of the season just 54 seconds into the second stanza off an assist from sophomore Amanda Ebbesson (Solna, Sweden). Doyle has now scored at least one goal in 10 straight matches in which she has played.
The Penmen would up their lead to 3-1 in the 58th minute, but Bridgeport would fight back to pull within one at 3-2 when sophomore Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.) scored off a corner kick from Nara DaCosta (Jr., Pancas, Braizil) and freshman Karin Oberg (Thorildsplans, Sweden) in the 77th minute, but that would be as close as the visitors could get on the night.
UB senior goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) made a total of nine saves on the evening.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will close out their 2018 regular season schedule with a trip to Rochester, New York to face Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. If the UB defeats RWC, the Purple Knights will claim the East Coast Conference regular season title and then host Daemen College in the ECC semifinals on Tuesday. A Bridgeport loss or tie coupled with a Mercy College win over Lincoln (Pa.) University will drop the team into the second spot in the ECC standings, and then UB would host LIU Post on Tuesday.
