Purple Knights Finish ECC Women's Soccer Regular Season At 8-0-0 With 5-1 Road Win Over Mercy
Team Has Now Won 11 Matches In A Row And Will Host Roberts Wesleyan At 6 PM On Wednesday In ECC Championship Semifinals
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team picked up its eleventh straight win and finished the East Coast Conference regular season schedule with an unblemished 8-0-0 record with a convincing 5-1 road win over the host Mercy College Mavericks on Saturday afternoon. The Purple Knights are now 14-3-0 overall. With the loss, Mercy is now 12-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in conference action.
UB graduate student Idoia Agirre (Legazpi, Spain) scored four goals on the afternoon to finish the regular season with a team-high and conference-leading 23 total goals. Agirre has also now found the back of the net in ten consecutive matches.
Bridgeport's other goal on the day was tallied by senior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Conn.), who now has a total of 13 goals so far in 2016. Colligan also assisted on Agirre's first goal of the day and the match that came at the 15:01 mark of play. Shannon's goal, the second of the day for UB, would be the game-winner on Saturday, as Mercy would score a goal with just over 39 second to play to keep the Purple Knights from their tenth shutout of the season.
Senior Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway) added two assists in the win to give her a team-high 12 helpers so far in 2016, and classmate Flo Gamby (Goffs Oak, England) had the assist on her team's final goal of the day which came from the foot of Agirre with just over 12 minutes to play.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) made five saves on the day for the winners to raise her overall season record to 10-2-0.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will enter the 2016 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament as the number one seed. UB will host the number four seed, Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan College at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2 at Knights Field. The winner of that match will then face of the winner of the number two seed LIU Post Pioneers versos the number three Mercy College Mavericks, who will also play on Wednesday on Long Island, on Friday, November 4 for the 2016 ECC Women's Soccer Crown and an automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. If Bridgeport wins on Wednesday, as the top seed, UB would host the ECC Championship match at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
