Women's Soccer Continues To Roll On With 7-0 Home ECC Win Over Molloy
Purple Knights Have Won Seven In A Row And Are Now 10-3-0 Overall And 4-0-0 In The ECC
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team continued its recent roll with a 7-0 home East Coast Conference home victory over the Molloy College Lions on Saturday afternoon. The Purple Knights have now won seven matches in a row and posted five straight shutouts. UB moves its overall record to 10-3-0 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 4-0-0. Molloy is now 6-6-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the ECC. During their seven-match winning streak, the Purple Knights have outscored the opposition, 35-2.
Saturday's triumph also marks the sixteenth straight season the Purple Knights have accumulated at least 10 wins in a season.
UB lead the match on Saturday 2-0 at the half on goals by senior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Conn.) and a tally from Idoia Agirre (Legazpi, Spain) off an assist from Colligan.
The Purple Knights exploded for five goals in the second half, as Agirre scored again to give her a team-leading 16 goals so far in 2016, and teammates Flo Gamby (Sr., Goffs Oak, England), Nicola Worthington (Sr., Chorley, England), on a penalty kick, and junior Amy Strath (Aberdeen, Scotland ) two times, found the back of the net.
Also registering assists on Saturday for the winners were senior Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway), who leads the team with eight helpers, freshman Valentina Florez (Mount Kisco, N.Y.), off a corner kick, and sophomore Kendra Fitzpatrick (Darien, Conn.) had two.
In goal, sophomores Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) and Melanie Ziegner (Münster, Germany) shared the clean sheet, as Wendelius started and made four saves, and Ziegner played the final 24:53 of the match. Bridgeport now has a total of seven shutouts as a team in 2016.
Up next, the Purple Knights will look to rmain undefeated in ECC play when they host Roberts Wesleyan College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday night.
