Women's Lacrosse Begins Season at Barton on Tuesday

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – With snowy conditions continuing to linger in the Northeast, the University of Bridgeport's women's lacrosse team will begin its 2024 campaign with a trip to North Carolina. The Purple Knights are slated to play their season opener against Barton College on Tuesday night.

THE SCHEDULE
A mere 301 days since the conclusion of the 2023 season, the Purple Knights are scheduled to start their new campaign with a trip to Barton College on Feb. 27. The Bulldogs will have already played a total of four games prior to hosting UB.

Following the matchup at Barton, Bridgeport will play three more road contests (Chowan, Virginia State, Southern Connecticut State) to start the year before making their home debut on March 9 against Saint Michael's.

The Purple Knights' CACC slate commences on March 20 against Caldwell. UB will wrap up the regular season with nine consecutive conference games.

LAST SEASON
The Purple Knights posted an overall record of 6-9 in 2023 and made an appearance in the CACC Tournament for the first time. UB was seeded sixth in the conference tournament after going 5-5 in the league.Five of Bridgeport's six wins last year were by at least eight goals.

Individually, Tereza Kreuzova was named to the CACC's All-Conference Second Team in 2023. She finished the season with 23 goals, seven assists, 52 draw controls and 33 ground balls.

Megan Kreitler served as UB's top scorer a year ago with 38 goals, while her sister Danielle Kreitler racked up 37 goals and 18 assists. The latter Kreitler also led Bridgeport in draw controls (65) while Tara Dimaio nabbed the most ground balls (40).

Junior goalkeeper Jacklyn Mellia played every minute in net a season ago, totaling 141 saves in 15 games.

THE ROSTER
The Purple Knights' roster features a total of 13 returners—six of which are now upperclassmen. UB welcomes four freshmen to the team in 2024.

The Purple Knights return over 80 percent of their scoring from a year ago, including their top-three goal scorers.

PRESEASON POLL
The Purple Knights were picked to finish fifth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) according to the preseason coaches poll released on Feb. 1.

COACH ORMROD
Head coach Jessica Ormrod is back for her second season leading the Purple and White. Ormrod piloted Bridgeport to six wins in 2023, including a record of 5-5 in the CACC. She had previously served as the Purple Knights' associate head coach in 2022.
