Women's Basketball Earns OT Win at Bloomfield, 75-69
Purple Knights battle back from 15-point second-half deficit.
BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Playing in their first overtime contest of the season, the University of Bridgeport's women's basketball team pulled out a 75-69 win at Bloomfield College on Wednesday.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Four players supplied the majority of UB's offense against the Bears. In fact, the quartet of Mackenzie Creighton, Shakira Hester, Ana Gascon, and Kaleigh Valle scored 66 of the Purple Knights' 75 total points on Wednesday.
Creighton led the way with a sensational stat line that included team highs and career highs in points (20), assists (10) and steals (3). She was especially clutch at the free-throw line with a perfect 9-for-9 performance.
Hester followed with 17 points on an efficient 6-of-10 from the field while Gascon finished the game with a superb 15 points, 15 rebounds, three steals, and three assists.
Off the bench, Valle supplied a career-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor. She also chipped in three steals.
Niyah Whitten was terrific for the Purple Knights as well, contributing six points, five rebounds and three steals while playing the entire 45 minutes.
As a team, the Purple Knights put together a season-best 21 assists on 26 made field goals. UB's offense featured an 18-for-25 clip from the free-throw line.
Defensively, Bridgeport racked up 12 steals to signify their ninth game in double figures this season. The Purple Knights also forced 19 turnovers and scored 21 points off those turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a remarkable comeback for the Purple Knights on Wednesday night. UB battled back from a 15-point deficit with 6:26 remaining in the third quarter to force extra time.
The Purple Knights then rattled off a 7-0 spurt in overtime to help clinch a much-needed road win. Valle knocked in a crucial three-pointer to put UB up 69-63 in overtime.
The Purple Knights were climbing back all night as they trailed by 17 in the second quarter and by eight at halftime. UB closed the game with a 33-18 run over the final 16:07 of regulation.
