Tough first quarter dooms Purple Knights on the road.
WILMINGTON, Del. – Continuing a stretch of 14 consecutive conference games, the University of Bridgeport's women's basketball team endured a 74-52 defeat at Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday afternoon.
It was a terrific effort from sophomore Harmony Earth-Wiley that piloted the Purple Knights. The Michigan native led UB in points (16), rebounds (13) and blocks (2) en route to her third career double-double.
Shakira Hester joined Earth-Wiley in double figures with 10 points. She also ranked second on the squad with seven rebounds while leading UB with three steals.
Bridgeport's bench served as another highlight as they outscored Goldey-Beacom's bench, 21-9. Mireya Johnson scored nine of those points on 4-of-4 shooting.
Bridgeport outrebounded Goldey-Beacom by a 39-29 margin. Purple Knights grabbed 17 of their boards on the offensive side of the court (19 second-chance points).
UB's offensive totals were compromised of a 20-of-60 effort from the floor, a 4-for-13 performance from long range and an 8-of-11 clip from the free-throw line.
It was a tough first quarter that seemingly doomed Bridgeport against the Lightning. After a 26-5 opening frame, the two teams played a nearly equal final 30 minutes of regulation.
