Women's Basketball Defeats Bloomfield in CACC Opener, 57-49
Purple Knights start 1-0 in the conference for the second straight year.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Following seven straight non-conference games to start the season, the University of Bridgeport's women's basketball team started CACC action on Tuesday with a 57-49 win over Bloomfield College. The Purple Knights start 1-0 in the conference for the second straight year.
Shakira Hester led the home squad with a resounding double-double. The Bronx, N.Y. native finished the win with 19 points and 17 rebounds—both of which served as game highs and season highs.
Hester, who now has 11 career double-doubles, is currently averaging 10.9 points and 9.3 rebounds this season.
In addition to Hester, UB's offense was mostly supplied by Niyah Whitten and Harmony Earth-Wiley. In fact, that trio contributed 51 of UB's 57 total points in the game.
Whitten finished as the second-leading scorer with 17 points while Earth-Wiley chipped in 15 off the bench.
Ana Gascon also performed well for the Purple Knights. The Spaniard hauled in nine rebounds, recorded two steals and dished out two assists.
Collectively speaking, UB's 57 points marked a new season high. The Purple Knights set the tone early on with a 19-10 opening quarter.
