BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Continuing a string of nine consecutive conference games, the University of Bridgeport's women's basketball team was defeated by Dominican on Wednesday night by a score of 69-56.
The final margin was in no way indicative of how tight the game was between the Purple Knights and Chargers. Bridgeport led 18-12 after the first quarter before taking a one-point lead into halftime (30-29).
After going down by as many as nine in the second half, UB cut the deficit to just 56-54 with 5:18 left. The Chargers, however, would close the game on a 13-2 run to make the final deficit 13 points.
Senior Samirah Akinwunmi led the way off the bench for Bridgeport with a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds. She finished an efficient 6-of-11 from the field, including 2-for-5 from long range.
Another senior, Shakira Hester, posted the most versatile line for UB with six points, six assists (season high), seven rebounds, and two steals. The Bronx, N.Y. native currently ranks eighth in the CACC in rebounds per game (8.2) and sixth in total steals (37).
Overall, it was an extremely balanced attack for the Purple Knights as seven different players scored at least five points in the game.
