Women's Basketball Grinds out Win Against Goldey-Beacom, 62-52
Purple Knights improve to 4-2 in the CACC this season.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Riding the momentum of a mid-week victory, the University of Bridgeport's women's basketball team picked up a 62-52 win over Goldey-Beacom on Saturday. The home triumph pushes the Purple Knights' CACC record to 4-2 this season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Senior Stephanie McBride enjoyed one of her best games of the season. The Brooklyn native did everything for the Purple Knights, finishing with 20 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks, two steals, and two assists. Saturday marked her fifth double-double of the season.
Fellow senior Shakira Hester also did a little bit of everything as she compiled totals of 15 points, four rebounds, two steals and two blocks. She has now scored double figures in seven straight contests.
Sophomore Niyah Whitten and senior Tariah Bryant joined in with double digits of their own, registering 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Purple Knights' seven committed turnovers is a new season low while they forced the Lightning into 16 giveaways.
Bridgeport also shot 17-for-24 from the free-throw line, which marked a season-best percentage on a season-high attempts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a grind-it-out defensive battle, it was Bridgeport that made all the correct plays down the stretch.
With the Purple Knights leading 40-37 after three quarters, they were able to stretch their lead to 47-39 at the 6:08 mark of the fourth quarter. Goldey-Beacom answered back with seven straight points to clip the edge to just one with 4:27 remaining.
After trading baskets, it was five straight points by Hester that propelled the home squad to a 54-48 edge with less than two minutes left. McBride then followed with four free throws to help gain a 59-52 edge with 28 ticks on the clock.
Bridgeport trailed 26-25 at halftime.
