Fourth Quarter Rally Allows Molloy To Edge UB Women's Hoops, 58-57
Janiece Loney And Stephanie McBride Each Score 18 Points For The Purple Knights
Rockville Centre, N.Y.-Two made free throws by Molloy's Cameron Corbett with just five seconds to play in the fourth quarter and a missed shot at the buzzer by the visiting University of Bridgeport capped a fourth quarter comeback by the host Lions, who outscored the Purple Knights, 21-7 in the final stanza, on their way to a 58-57 East Coast Conference women's basketball victory on Wednesday night on Long Island. UB is now 3-12 overall and 0-9 in the ECC. Molly moves to 7-7 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
Wednesday's loss was a tough one for Bridgeport, as the Purple Knights led 29-25 at the half, and held a 16-point advantage, 50-34, late in the third quarter.
Graduate student Janiece Loney (Herndon, Va.) and junior Stephanie McBride (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led UB in scoring on Wednesday, as they each scored 18 points. McBride finished with a double-double grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds, and Loney led her team with six assists.
Sophomore Brianna Meekins (Bridgeport, Conn.) also reached double figures for Bridgeport netting 10 points.
Gabriella Aspuru led Molloy with a game-high 21 points on the night.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team returns to Hubbell Gym on Sunday afternoon, as the Purple Knights host Queens (N.Y.) College in an East Coast Conference tilt. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
