Women's Hoops Returns To Action But Falls To UDC, 56-52
Brianna Meekins Finishes With 18 Points And 12 Rebounds For The Purple Knights
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team returned to the court for the first time in the 2022 calendar year, and the host Purple Knights held a 52-47 lead with 4:47 to play in the game, but the visiting University of the District of Columbia Firebirds closed the contest out on a 9-0 run to pick up a 56-52 East Coast Conference victory in Harvey Hubbell Gym on Wednesday night. UB is now 3-9 overall and 0-5 in conference play. The Firebirds up their season mark to 7-5 and remain unbeaten in the ECC at 3-0.
Sophomore Brianna Meekins (Bridgeport, Conn.) led the Purple Knights on Wednesday notching a double-double of a game-high 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Meekins was joined in double-digit scoring by graduate student Janiece Loney (Herndon, Va.) with 16 points. Loney just missed her own double-double, as she finished with nine boards.
Halia Ellis and Tori Williams led UDC as the each netted 14 points, and Ronnasia Blatch-Huggins finished with a double-double of 12 points and a game-best 16 rebounds for the winners.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team is schedule to open a three-game road swing with an ECC contest at the College of Staten Island on Saturday afternoon. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
