Women's Basketball Tops Nyack, 79-63, In 2021-22 Home Debut
UB Closes Out The First Half On A 19-4 Run And Never Looks Back
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team closed out the first half on a 19-4 run to grab a 35-30 halftime lead which they never relinquished, as the Purple Knights defeated the visiting Warriors of Nyack College, 79-63, in UB's 2021-22 home opener on Saturday afternoon in Hubbell Gym. With the victory, the Purple Knights are now 2-3 on the season. Nyack remains winless at 0-4.
Graduate student Janiece Loney (Herndon, Va.) led for Purple Knights in double-digit scoring with a UB career high 23 points. Loney also tied for the team lead in assists on the day with six.
Classmate Samirah Henderson (Rahway, N.J.) had another solid all-around game for the winners netting 19 points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing off six assists.
Brianna Meekins (So., Bridgeport, Conn.) finished with a double-double for UB, as she recorded a season-high in points with 18 and rebounds with a game-best 12 boards.
Junior Stephanie McBride (Brooklyn, N.Y.) shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor on Saturday, as she finished with 15 points. McBride also corralled seven rebounds, had four assists and blocked three shots.
Carly Bolivar led three Warriors in double figures with 21 points.
Saturday's 79 points are a season-high scoring total for the Purple Knights, who shot 50.0 percent from the field in the contest, connecting on 29-of 58 field goal attempts.
