UB Women Open Strong But Fall At ECC-Leading Queens (N.Y.), 78-65
Sophomore Samnell Vonleh Leads Purple Knights With 23 Points, 14 Rebounds And Five Blocked Shots
Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team got off to a quick start on the road against the East Coast Conference-leading Queens (N.Y.) College Knights leading 17-13 after the first quarter and 35-34 at halftime, but the host Knights outscored UB, 22-12, in the third quarter to take a 56-47 lead, and they never looked back on their way to a 78-65 conference win on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Purple Knights are now an even 12-2 overall and 6-8 in the ECC. QC has now won 14 games in a row, and the Knights are now 22-3 overall and 15-1 atop the East Coast Conference standings.
Sophomore Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) had her best game of the 2016-17 season at Queens scoring a season-high 23 points and finishing with a double-double grabbing 14 rebounds. Vonleh also added five blocked shots on the night.
Samnell was joined in double figures by senior Camera Miley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 16 points, and junior Aurelie Leblanc-Florent (Longueuil, Quebec, Canada) with 10 points.
Madison Rowland led Queens with a game-high 28 points.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will open a key three-game homestand with their conference tournament hoops in the balance, when the Purple Knights host St. Thomas Aquinas College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in Hubbell Gym.
