Three Players Notch Double-Doubles As UB Women Stop UDC, 76-56
Aaliyah Mercer, Morgen Caution and Samnell Vonleh All Reach Double Figures In Scoring And Rebounding
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team dominated the inside game on Wednesday night scoring 50 of its points in the paint and grabbing a total of 65 rebounds, as the host Purple Knights cruised to a 76-56 East Coast Conference win over the visiting University of the District of Columbia Firebirds. UB is now 10-8 overall and an even 4-4 in conference play. UDC slips to 2-17 overall and 1-8 in the ECC. The 10 wins ties the Purple Knights' win total for all of last season.
Senior Aaliyah Mercer (Bronx. N.Y.), junior Morgen Caution (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) helped lead the Bridgeport attack on Wednesday, as they each notched a double-double. Mercer scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Vonleh chipped in 14 points and had a game-best 11 rebounds, and Caution netted 10 points and pulled down 10 boards.
Senior Camera Miley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also reached double-digit scoring for the winners with 11 points, and classmate Louise Ovner (Vallentuna, Sweden) had double figures on the glass with 10 rebounds giving the Purple Knights four players with 10 or more rebounds, as Bridgeport ended the game with a 65-39 advantage on the boards.
UDC's Bailee White led all scorers on the night with 21 points.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will look to run its winning streak to three games with an ECC game at Mercy College on Saturday. The game will be played at Westchester Community College, and tip-off at 12:30 p.m.
