CALDWELL, N.J. – Seeing action for the first time in 11 days, the University of Bridgeport's softball team swept a doubleheader at Caldwell on Sunday. The two victories push the Purple Knights' record to 23-9 this season, including 13-1 in the CACC.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 3, Caldwell 0
A gem from Kaite Burawski sparked the Purple Knights in the opener. The graduate student tossed her fifth shutout of the year, allowing just four total hits in the process.
Burawski, who finished with seven strikeouts in the seven innings, currently ranks second in the CACC in punchouts this season (113). She now holds a 1.70 ERA across 94.2 innings pitched.
Offensively, the Purple Knights put their three runs across in the fifth inning. Angela Oros registered a two-run single to put UB on the board while McKenzie Morgan also singled in a run.
Madison D'Amato scored the first run of the game after extending her remarkable hitting streak to 27 straight contests. She recorded a lead-off double to start the rally in the fifth.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 10, Caldwell 2
UB's bats awakened in a big way in the finale. After just four hits in the opener, the Purple Knights piled up 10 knocks in game two.
D'Amato tallied three of those hits, including her first home run of the season, to extend her marvelous hit streak once again. She has now tallied at least one hit in 28 straight games.
D'Amato continues to lead the CACC in batting average (.495), on-base percentage (.583), runs scored (43), and doubles (13) this season.
Mya Jones, who is now ranked second behind D'Amato in the CACC in batting average (.444), went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Jones knocked RBI doubles in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Oros, who now ranks second in the CACC in slugging percentage (.692), followed up her two RBIs in the opener with an RBI double and two-run home run in the finale.
Oros leads the Purple Knights with five home runs this season.
Paityn Thibodeaux rounded out UB's run-producers courtesy of a a two-RBI single in the fifth.
UB's offensive output was assisted by a great Vise Zarate outing in the circle. The junior right-hander allowed just two runs in her 13th complete game of the year.
Zarate now owns a 9-5 record this season with a 2.63 ERA.
