Softball Scores 21, Hits Five Home Runs in Sweep of Post
Purple Knights have outscored their last six opponents, 52-4.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Sparked by 28 total hits and five home runs in just 10 innings, the University of Bridgeport's softball team earned a pair of decisive wins over Post University on Tuesday. The red-hot Purple Knights are now 17-7 this season, including a 7-1 record in the CACC.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 8, Post 0 (Five Innings)
UB's onslaught of an afternoon began with 13 hits in the opener and a three-hit shutout from junior pitcher Vise Zarate.
Zarate, who finished with five strikeouts in the win, lowered her ERA to 2.75 across 63.2 innings this season. She now holds a record of 6-4 after her first shutout of the year.
Mya Jones, who leads the CACC in RBIs (32) this season, added three more in the opener. She hammered an RBI single in the first before launching her first home run of the season—a two-run shot—in the third.
Madison D'Amato, Sydnee Perreault and Emily Chase all joined in with RBI knocks of their own. D'Amato and Perreault each knocked in runs with doubles while Chase plated a pair with a single in the fifth.
When all was said and done, UB had nine different players register hits in the first game and four Purple Knights tally multiple knocks.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 13, Post 0 (Five Innings)
The offensive fireworks were even more prolific in the finale as UB launched four home runs, three doubles and a season-high 15 total hits.The Purple Knights notched seven of their season-high 13 runs in the third inning.
Alex Hughes (first career), Paityn Thibodeaux, Angela Oros and Charlee Horton all hit home runs in the second game.
Oros, who finished 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs in the finale, leads the Purple Knights with four long balls (2nd, CACC) this season.
D'Amato, meanwhile, managed two more hits and matched Hughes with three RBIs in the second game.
Remarkably, D'Amato continues to lead the CACC in batting average (.467), on-base percentage (.559), runs scored (35), hits (35) and walks (15) this season.
Breanna Pelaez also enjoyed a terrific second contest on Tuesday. The freshman outfielder went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
On the pitching side of things, freshman Tanya Sanchez didn't allow a hit over four scoreless innings in her third start of the year. Fellow rookie Hailey Smith also saw action, closing out the game with a zero in the fifth.
