BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – In a rematch of last year's CACC championship game that never took place, the University of Bridgeport's softball team (11-7, 1-1 CACC) split a doubleheader against Wilmington University on Saturday. The Purple Knights earned a 6-5 win in the opener before falling 5-3 in the finale.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 6, Wilmington 5
A five-run third inning helped UB to the opening triumph.
Mya Jones knocked in the Purple Knights' first run courtesy of an RBI double while Angela Oros launched a two-run home run to give UB a 3-1 lead.
Oros, who has both of UB's long balls this season, went a perfect 4-for-4 in the first game of the day.
The Purple Knights added two more runs in the third courtesy of bases-loaded walks from Madison D'Amato and Jadyn Prievo.
Prievo also knocked in UB's sixth run in the fifth inning off an RBI bunt out.
In total, Bridgeport's offense piled up 10 hits and five walks in the opener.
Kaite Burawski picked up the win in the circle to improve her record to 7-3 this season. The left-hander went the distance with seven strikeouts.
Burawski leads the CACC in punchouts this season with 77. She also boasts a 2.12 ERA across 62.2 innings pitched.
GAME TWO – Wilmington 5, Bridgeport 3
The Purple Knights were unable to hold on to a 2-0 lead in the finale as Wilmington plated a pair of runs in the second and two more in the fourth.
D'Amato led UB's offense with a 2-for-4 effort. She also scored her 26th run of the season which is nine more than any other player in the CACC.
D'Amato is also ranked third in the conference in batting average (.431) while Oros (.421) and Jones (.375) are also slotted in the top-10 in the league in hitting.
Another UB highlight was Alex Hughes registering her first career triple in the third inning. McKenzie Morgan scored on the play after recording a one-out single.
