NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In their final tune up prior to conference play beginning on Saturday, the University of Bridgeport's softball team split a doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State on Thursday. The 1-1 afternoon puts the Purple Knights' record at 10-6 this season.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 8, SCSU 0 (6 Innings)
It was another dominant display from Kaite Burawski that held SCSU scoreless in the opener. The left-handed grad student tossed a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. She walked just one batter and faced just 20 total Owls.
Burawski now owns a 6-3 record this season with 70 strikeouts (1st in the CACC) and a 1.76 ERA across 55.2 innings pitched. She has 11 more Ks than any other pitcher in the conference this season.
Offensively, Burawski enjoyed more than enough run support. Bridgeport's top-five batters in the lineup combined to go 9-for-17 with seven RBIs and eight runs scored.
Angela Oros, Mya Jones and McKenzie Morgan all hammered RBI doubles for the road squad. Oros and Jones also singled in runs en route to finishing the game with a team-best three RBIs each.
Madison D'Amato joined in with one of UB's four doubles in the game while going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a walk.
GAME TWO – SCSU 5, Bridgeport 4 (8 Innings)
The Purple Knights were unable to hold onto a 4-2 lead in the sixth as SCSU plated a pair of runs in that inning prior to walking off in the eighth.
It was once again UB's top of the order that powered the offense. Bridgeport's top-four hitters combined to go 8-for-13 with four runs scored and four RBIs.
Oros went a perfect 3-for-3 to cap off the day with five total hits and four RBIs. Jones, meanwhile, added three more RBIs to finish the doubleheader with six of them.
Jones leads the CACC in RBIs this season with 21—five more than any other player in the league.
D'Amato and Sydnee Perreault each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored apiece. D'Amato recorded her third career triple while Perreault posted a pair of doubles.
D'Amato currently leads the CACC in runs scored (24) and ranks third in the league in batting average (.423).
