MELBOURNE, Fla. – Prior to flying back to Connecticut on Saturday night, the University of Bridgeport's softball team picked up a pair of wins to wrap up their spring break trip to Florida. The Purple Knights (9-5) tallied a 6-2 triumph over Ursuline before earning a 3-2 victory against Gannon.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 6, Ursuline 2
A terrific outing from freshman pitcher Tanya Sanchez propelled UB in the opener. The right-hander allowed just one run on four hits across six innings of work.
On the other side of the ball, it was the usual suspects that piloted the Bridgeport offense.
UB's middle of the order featured Mya Jones going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs while Angela Oros went a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk.
Madison D'Amato set the table from the lead-off spot, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Freshman Lacie Grenier joined the attack with her first career RBI. She maneuvered a single in the fifth that provided the Purple Knights with a 3-0 lead.
Fellow rookie Breanna Pelaez went 1-for-1 with a run scored and a walk in the game.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 3, Gannon 2
In a tighter finale, it was another standout effort from UB's ace Kaite Burawski. The left-hander tallied a season-high 14 strikeouts while allowing just three hits across seven innings of work.
Burawski improves her record to 5-3 this season with a 1.97 ERA. She has piled up an impressive 62 strikeouts across just 49.2 innings.
Oros, Jones and D'Amato were once again at the forefront offensively.
Oros knocked in Bridgeport's first two runs courtesy of a two-run single in the third. D'Amato, meanwhile, scored two runs while going 1-for-2 at the dish.
UB broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth with a game-winning run courtesy of a Gannon error.
