Winter Haven, Fla.-The University of Bridgeport softball team evened its 2020 season record at 4-4 on Monday by winning two games in Florida, as the Purple Knights opened the day with a 7-3 victory over Indiana (Pa.) University and wrapped the afternoon with a 5-4 win over Assumption College.
Against the Crimson Hawks of IUP, senior Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) blasted two home runs in the game and had three runs batted in, and freshman Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calf.) also smacked a two-run dinger.
UB freshman Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.) also had two runs batted in for the winners, and junior Elyssa Marmolejo (Rialto, Calif.) stayed hot at the plated adding two more base knocks for the Purple Knights.
In the pitching circle in Monday's first game, freshman Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.) started and picked up her first win of the season, and senior Ashley Eisnor (Medford, Mass.) picked up the save working 1.1 innings of scoreless ball.
Versus, Assumption, senior Cassidy Blackwell (Los Angeles, Calf.) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and drove in the winning run in the top of seventh with a two-out double that plated Taylor Yates who had doubled in the previous at bat, her second hit against the Greyhounds.
Meg McFarland and junior Sarah Silver (Vernon, Conn.) had the Purple Knights' other runs batted in to help defeat Assumption.
Freshman Kaite Burawski (Hartley, Del.) picked up the win in Monday's second game working a complete game in which she allowed six hits, four runs (two earned), as she fanned five and did not issue a walk. She is now 2-2 on the year.
On Tuesday afternoon, the UB softball team will continue action in the Sunshine State with games against Stonehill and Wayne State (Mich.) University.
