Molloy
Rockville Centre, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team needed to sweep the host Molloy College Lions on Sunday afternoon and have the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans lose twice at NYIT to host a home East Coast Conference Championship Tournament on Wednesday afternoon, and that is exactly what happened, as UB defeated Molloy, 1-0, in game one, and the Purple Knights scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning in game two to pick up a 5-4 victory. Those two wins coupled with a pair of STAC losses will have the Spartans coming to the Park City for a single game on Wednesday afternoon. With the two wins, UB is now 30-14 overall and 15-9 in the ECC. This season is the first time UB has won 30 games under the direction of head coach Dawn Stearns. Molloy wraps up its season at 17-34 overall and 7-17 in conference play.
In game one, sophomore Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) drove in the game's only run in the fifth inning, and graduate student Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) earned win number 16 of the season firing a four-hit, complete game shutout.
In the nightcap, UB trailed 4-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning before exploding for four runs on a two-run homer by junior Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.), an RBI double by Ramon and a game-winning single by senior Jenna DiLorenzo (Woodbridge, Conn.).
Earlier in game two, senior Stephanie Dean (Old Lyme, Conn.) blasted a solo home run for the winners.
Sophomore Miranda Hillman (Placentia, Calif.) worked a complete game to pick up her eighth win of 2019, as she fanned eight Lions.
