Bridgeport, Conn.-It was a memorable Senior Day in Seaside Park for the University of Bridgeport softball team, as the Purple Knights picked up a key East Coast Conference doubleheader sweep over the visiting NYIT Bears on Sunday afternoon walking off with a 3-2 win in 10 innings in the opener and completing the sweep with an 11-4 triumph in game two. The Purple Knights are now 22-20 overall and 9-11 in conference play. NYIT is now 8-22 overall and 6-12 in the ECC.
In the opener, senior Yalitza Rodriguez (Freeport, N.Y.) won the game with her third hit of game one, on a tenth-inning, walk-off single that scored freshman Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.), who led-off the frame with a walk and then stole second.
Sophomore Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) went 3-for-3 in the opener with two runs batted in, including hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.
In the pitching circle, senior Amanda Staheli (Pecatonica, Ill.) worked all 10 innings in game one to earn win number 12 on the season, as she allowed only four hits while striking out 11 batters.
In game two, UB banged out 11 total hits on their way to the win, as they plated runs in every inning.
Luzzi added two more hits and three runs batted in the nightcap, as she crushed her eleventh home run of 2018.
Sophomore Samantha Sabor (Plainfield, Ill.) and junior Cherlynn Townsend (Hurst, Texas) also had two runs batted in for the Purple Knights in game two.
Sophomore Ashley Eisnor (Medford, Mass.) pitched four innings to pick up her seventh win of the year in the nightcap, and freshman Brittany Prock (Sunnyvale, Calif.) earned her third save of the season working three scoreless innings.
The UB softball team is scheduled to be right back in action on Monday afternoon at home when they step out of conference play for a non-conference twinbill versus Nyack College. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. in Seaside Park.
