School Records and PRs Highlight Track and Field's Outdoor Opener in Virginia
Purple Knights take part in first outdoor meet at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.
LYNCHBURG, Va. – In the first meet of their outdoor campaign, the University of Bridgeport's men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational this weekend (March 28-29) in Lynchburg, Va.
MEN'S RECAP
The Purple Knights started their efforts on Friday with a pair of PRs from John Panzera and Nick Migliarese in the javelin. Panzera placed seventh (46.68m) while Migliarese ended up in 11th (40.40m).
Migliarese followed up on Saturday with a massive PR in the hammer throw which also serves as a school record. The Florida native rattled off a 40.43m to finish in sixth. He also posted a collegiate-best mark in the 110-hurdles (17.92).
Panzera competed in the 110-hurdles as well and neared his PR with a seventh-place time of 15.56.
The 800-meter also offered a terrific highlight for the Purple Knights. Freshman Edoardo Vandelli earned a lifetime-best time of 1:53.24, which was good for sixth place. The school-record mark is currently ranked 36th in all of Division II.
More notable performances on the men's side included Nickolas Barba recording a school-record time (11.33) in the 100-meter and Tayshaun Bookal tallying a PR (11.61) in the same event.
Damian Coles joined in with his own PR in the 400-meter (51.56) while Marvin Fenwick, Jr. maneuvered a new school record (12.93m) in the triple jump.
The men also established a school record in the 4x400 relay. UB's squad of Coles, Vandelli, Migliarese and Panzera teamed up for a time of 3:34.70.
WOMEN'S RECAP
Anna-Mae Nellis strung together an exceptional outdoor debut for the UB women. She notched a trio or school records and several conference qualifying marks.
Nellis started things with a PR in the javelin (36.92m) as she smashed her previous best distance by more than eight feet. She followed up that performance with school record scores in the high jump (1.40m), 100-hurdles (17.63) and the shot put (11.13m).
Nellis also combined with Abety Kivagheni, Faith Hershberger, and Kara Sampath to establish a school record in the 4x100 relay (53.17).
The Purple Knights established a school record in the 4x400 relay as well. The group of Kivagheni, Lynzie Lawton, Julia Fortune and Stephanie Lickteig recorded a time of 4:44.23.
Speaking of Lickteig, she supplied a terrific individual outing as well on Saturday in the 1500m Open. The freshman clocked a school record time of 5:33.44. To compare, Lickteig's best indoor mile time converts to a 1500-mark of over 5:40.
