Still Alive! Men's Basketball Knocks Off Dominican, 92-79, to Advance to CACC Championship Game
Purple Knights avenge a pair of regular-season losses to the Chargers.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Still alive! Playing in their first-ever CACC Semifinal, the third-seeded University of Bridgeport men's basketball team registered a 92-79 win over top-seeded Dominican on Saturday night. The Purple Knights (18-12) avenge a pair of regular-season losses to the Chargers to advance to the conference championship game against Post University on Sunday afternoon (2:30 p.m.).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
A massive UB win was aided by sensational efforts from a host of Purple Knights, including seven players with at least eight points and four in double figures.
Amadou Traore registered a season-high 17 points for a second straight game while Malikai Delgado (16 pts) and Jason Edokpayi (14 pts) combined for a 30-spot off the bench.
UB's bench, as a collective, outscored Dominican by 20 points (43-23). Edokpayi scored all 14 of his points in the second half. He also contributed two blocks while tying Jayson Handy for the team lead in rebounds (8).
Aliou Cisse, the CACC Player of the Year, rounded out UB's double-figure scorers with 14 points. He also tallied two steals, two assists and a block.
Caleb Jacobs was superb for Bridgeport as well, dishing out a game-high seven assists to go along with nine points. Justin Hendrick matched with nine points of his own off the bench.
As they have done all season, the Purple Knights were all over the boards versus Dominican. UB posted a 48-37 rebounding advantage which included 12 on the offensive side of the ball.
Offensively, the Purple Knights finished 40-of-75 (53.3%) from the field to mark their seventh game this season over the 50-percent mark.
Bridgeport also racked up 23 assists in the game, which is their third highest total of the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Down 13-12 early in the first half, the Purple Knights rattled off a 25-10 run to take a 37-23 lead at the 3:17 mark. The Chargers went on to close the frame with a 12-4 spurt.
Up by six at the break, Bridgeport utilized a 17-3 run early in the second half to seize control of the contest.
The Purple Knights were ahead by as many as 19 points after halftime and maintained a lead of at least nine points across the final 12:04 of regulation.
