Men's Basketball Muscles Past Saint Michael's, 82-76
Win pushes UB’s record to 6-5 this season.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Despite facing a 14-point, first-half deficit, the University of Bridgeport's men's basketball team registered an 82-76 win over Saint Michael's College on Monday night. The win, which snapped a two-game losing streak, pushes UB's record to 6-5 this season.
In a rare battle of Purple Knights, it was a massive second half that propelled the home squad. Down by nine at the break, UB outscored Saint Michael's, 52-37, over the final 20 minutes of action.
Bridgeport utilized an 11-4 run to take its first lead of the game at the 1:54 mark of the second half. Nick Traill's old-fashioned three-point play put the home fans in a frenzy and lifted UB to a 70-67 edge.
It was another three-point play that ultimately closed the door on Saint Mike's. Caleb Jacobs retrieved his own missed free throw before muscling in a layup that put UB up 73-67 with 1:40 remaining.
A big portion of Bridgeport's success stemmed from takeaways and turnovers. In fact, UB piled up a season-high 20 steals while forcing 32 Saint Mike's turnovers.
Individually speaking, Bridgeport had five players reach double figures.
Traill led the way with 16 points while Malikai Delgado and Jason Edokpayi each chipped in 15. Traill also dished out a team-high five assists while Delgado swiped a career-best seven steals.
Edokpayi's night, meanwhile, featured 11 rebounds to mark his second double-double of the year.
Caleb Jacobs and Aliou Cisse also finished in double figures thanks to 12 and 13 points respectively. Despite tying his lowest point total of the season, Cisse still leads the CACC in scoring at 21.5 ppg.
Bridgeport, which ranks third in the CACC in made free throws this season, knocked in 22 more from the charity stripe on Monday night.
UB added 20 offensive rebounds against Saint Michael's as well. Bridgeport continues to lead the CACC in offensive boards per game (17.4) this season.
