BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Highlighted by a season-high run total in the opener, the University of Bridgeport's baseball team tallied a doubleheader split against Georgian Court on Friday. The Purple Knights earned a 16-3 win in game one prior to falling 9-4 in the finale.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 16, Georgian Court 3 (Seven Innings)
A remarkable performance from Jeremy Rodrigues piloted UB's dominant triumph in the opener. The senior registered the incredibly rare cycle in which he piled up a sensational eight RBIs and three runs scored.
Rodrigues put together a 4-for-5 clip at the dish, including a double in the first inning, a home run in the second, a triple in the third and a single in the sixth.
Rodrigues is now UB's leader in almost every offensive category, including batting average (.336), slugging percentage (.579), hits (36) and RBIs (21). He is also tied with Liam O'Neal for the team lead in runs scored (22).
Sophomore Tyler Pennisi and junior Anthony Matturro also showed out in the opener as they each tallied three hits while combining for seven RBIs.
Anthony Armenia, meanwhile, reached base five times (4 walks) and Vin Mallon went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a walk.
Holding a massive lead on the other side, Brendan Palmer picked up his second win on the mound this season. He allowed just three runs across six frames.
In addition to the season high in runs, the Purple Knights also achieved season bests in stolen bases (11), walks (15), RBIs (15) and extra-base hits (6).
GAME TWO – Georgian Court 9, Bridgeport 4
UB's offense couldn't replicate the success of game one in the finale. The Purple Knights squeezed out just four hits in the seven-inning affair.
Rodrigues followed up his cycle with another two-run double and a pair of walks.
Christian Ortiz provided UB's other two runs courtesy of a two-run home run in the seventh. He now has a pair of long balls this season to go along with a .326 batting average.
Mallon scored on the home run after initiating one of Bridgeport's 10 walks in the contest.
Ryan DiLillo pitched well out of the bullpen for the Purple Knights. He closed out the game with three scoreless innings. DiLillo allowed just one hit.
