BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – In the first of three doubleheaders over the next four days, the University of Bridgeport's baseball team earned a pair of wins over Lincoln University on Thursday. The conference sweep improves the Purple Knights' CACC record to 5-7 this season.
GAME ONE - Bridgeport 4, Lincoln 3
A pair of home runs supplied the majority of UB's offense in the opener. The Purple Knights also received a trio of terrific pitching performances.
Jeremy Rodrigues put Bridgeport on the board in the first inning with a two-run, inside-the-park home run while Anthony Matturro launched a solo shot in the fourth. It was Matturro's first-career long ball.
Anthony Armenia scored UB's fourth run on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. He reached base initially on a single after Matturro's home run.
Junior shortstop Liam O'Neal led UB with two hits in the contest, including a double in the first inning.
On the mound, left-hander Matt Wild picked up his first career win in his third start of the year. He allowed just three runs on four hits across six innings of work.
Giovanni Valerio came on in relief and posted a pair of scoreless frames while Ryan DiLillo closed the door with a scoreless ninth. DiLillo picked up his first career save.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 5, Lincoln 3
Using their momentum from the opener, the Purple Knights struck quickly once again in the finale.
O'Neal hammered his third home run of the season in the first inning—a two run shot—to put UB ahead 2-0. He finished Thursday 3-for-6 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Bridgeport tacked on three more runs in the third inning courtesy of three consecutive RBI singles. Matturro, Armenia and Nico Salmeri all plated runs that provided UB with a 5-1 lead.
Rodrigues, Matturro and Salmeri each posted two hits in the finale as Bridgeport piled up nine total knocks. Mallon and Rodrigues both notched doubles.
On the pitching side of things, UB's starter Tyler Hodella tallied the win after allowing just two runs on four innings of work.
After Hodella, Dominick Weidtman made his season debut with a pair of scoreless frames while DiLillo returned to record his second save of the day.
