BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Continuing a four-game weekend series against Caldwell, the University of Bridgeport's baseball team split a second straight doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Purple Knights now stand at 2-2 in the CACC this season.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 6, Caldwell 4 (7 Innings)
UB turned a 1-0 deficit into a 6-1 lead through four innings. Christian Ortiz put the Purple Knights on the board with a two-run single while Nico Salmeri doubled in two more runs to give Bridgeport a 4-1 lead.
Ortiz finished the second game 3-for-3 after going 3-for-4 in the opener. He is currently ranked seventh in the CACC in batting average (.426) this season.
UB's offense erupted once again in the fourth as Liam O'Neal hammered an RBI triple before then scoring on an RBI double from Jaden Echevarria.
Echevarria reached base four times in the opener, registering two hits and two walks.
With a lead at his back, freshman pitcher Alex Bulger picked up his first career win in his first career start. He allowed just one earned run on four hits across six innings of work.
Joaquin Brasher closed the door in the seventh to tally his fourth save as a Purple Knight.
GAME ONE – Caldwell 7, Bridgeport 6
In a back-and-forth opener, which featured three separate lead changes, Caldwell broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth inning.
Bridgeport was up 2-0, down 5-2 and then up 6-5—all in six innings of action. Trailing 7-6 in the ninth, UB had a runner thrown out at the plate with one out.
Bridgeport's first two runs came in style as O'Neal and Jeremy Rodrigues launched back-to-back solo home runs in the first inning.
O'Neal now has three home runs and a triple over his last six games while Rodrigues now has 18 career long balls.
Marcos Dominguez, Anthony Matturro and Echevarria also added RBI singles in the first contest.
In total, Bridgeport matched a season high with 15 hits with five Purple Knights tallying multiple knocks.
Vincenzo Bruno pitched extremely well in a relief appearance. The Italian right-hander allowed just one run while scattering just three hits in five innings of work.
