Pitching Rules As UB Baseball Opens New Seaside Diamond With 1-0 Win Over Southern Connecticut State
Andrew Oswald Plus Jonathan Brooks Combine On A Five-Hit Shutout And Patrick Palmer Knocks In Game's Only Run
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team made the most of its three hits on Wednesday afternoon, as the Purple Knights opened their brand new diamond in Seaside Park with a 1-0 win over the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University. UB is now 3-13 overall, and SCSU is 9-10 on the season.
The Purple Knights scored the only run of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Joey Grillo (Sound Beach, N.Y.) drew a leadoff walk and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Cory Listing (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) and scored on a single to right by sophomore Patrick Palmer (Ansonia, Conn.).
Pitching ruled the day for Bridgeport as senior Andrew Oswald (St. James, N.Y.) and junior Jonathan Brooks (Stratford, Conn.) combined on a five-hit shutout.
Oswald worked the first three innings of the game allowing three hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Brooks picked up the win out of the bullpen to move his season record to 1-2, as he gave up only two hits over six innings while fanning seven and issuing only one base on balls.
Nate Carney was the hard-luck loser for the Owls allowing only two hits and one run in six innings, and Ronnie Rossomando worked two scoreless inning in relief for Southern Connecticut.
Up next, the UB baseball team will open East Coast Conference play this weekend with a four-game set against St. Thomas Aquinas College. Action will begin with a single game hosted by STAC on Friday afternoon.
