Uniondale, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team split an East Coast Conference road doubleheader against Molloy College on Saturday afternoon, losing game one, 5-2, and winning game two, 7-2. UB is now 13-18 overall and 9-6 in the ECC. Molloy is now 15-14 overall and 4-7 in conference action.
In the opener, the Purple Knights held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of the nine-inning affair, but the host Lions put four runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead which proved to be the final score. UB sophomore Casey Ouellette (New Canaan, Conn.) and freshman Ben Torres (Miami, Fla.) each had two hits in game one, and freshman Jose Negron (New Haven, Conn.) and senior Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.) drove in the Purple Knights' runs.
Sophomore Anthony Alicki (Milford, Conn.) took the loss on the mound in game one working 6.1 innings in which he allowed four hits, five runs (four earned) with 10 strike outs and one walk.
In the nightcap, the Bridgeport bats came alive in the seven-inning contest banging out a total of 14 hits.
Jose Negron went 3-for-3 in game two, and Tim Bickford was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs scored, plus he blasted second home run of the year.
Senior John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.) knocked in two runs in game two going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
On the mound in the nightcap, junior Rob Anderson (Stratford, Conn.) raised his season record to an unblemished 5-0 working a complete game in which he allowed three hits, two runs (both earned) with seven strike outs and four walks during his seven innings on the mound.
UB and Molloy will close out their four-game series on Sunday at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport with a single, nine-inning tilt. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
