Myrtle Beach, S.C.-The UB baseball team wrapped up its 205 season-opening trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Sunday, and the Purple Knights lost a pair of games to the East Region's top two teams, Southern New Hampshire University and Franklin Pierce. Bridgeport opened the day with a 7-1 loss to SNHU and the closed the day with a hard-fought 8-6 loss against FPU. With the two losses, UB is 0-5 on the young season. Southern New Hampshire is now 5-3, and Franklin Pierce stays undefeated at 5-0.
In Sunday's opener against the Penmen, newcomer, sophomore Anthony Alicki (Milford, Conn.) made his Bridgeport debut as the starting pitcher and did a fine job in a losing effort working seven strong innings allowing only two runs on six hits with four strike outs and only two walks.
At the plate versus SNHU, senior Mike Miniter (Branford, Conn.) drove in UB's lone run, and senior Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.) had a double.
In Sunday's finale versus Franklin Pierce, the Purple Knights trailed 6-1 heading to the top of the sixth inning and rallied to tie the game at 6-6 before the Ravens plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-6 advantage which would prove to be the final score.
Against the Ravens, UB banged out a team, season-high nine hits led by sophomore Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) and junior Kyle Platner (Bernardston, Mass.), who each had two hits. Steigerwald and classmate Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) each had two runs batted in Sunday's nightcap.
On the mound, senior left-hander Brian O'Keefe (Milford, Conn.) took the loss as he was not helped by four Bridgeport errors that led to six unearned runs during his 5.1 inning stint on the hill. Brian fanned seven and walked two batters during those 5.1 innings pitched.
Up next for the Purple Knights' baseball team is the squad's annual Spring Break trip to Florida. UB opens play in the Sunshine State on Thursday, March 12 versus Bentley University at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.
