UB Athletics Celebrates NGWSD at Roosevelt School
Purple Knights run youth sports clinic with grades 3-8.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – In celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the University of Bridgeport's Athletic Department had members of its women's sports teams travel to nearby Roosevelt School on Wednesday (Feb. 5) to organize and execute a fun sports clinic.
UB's student-athletes, which included representatives from eight of Bridgeport's women's athletic teams, arrived at Roosevelt in two different shifts in the morning. They were able to introduce their specific sport to the kids (grades 3-8), run various drills and games and answer any questions that the students may have had.
"Being in the community on this day means more than just giving back, it's about creating lasting change and empowering young girls to believe in their abilities, both on and off the field," said UB women's lacrosse and women's soccer senior Mikayla Kennedy. "To be able to give back and show these young girls that sports are for everyone — no matter your background or skill level — makes this day meaningful. Ultimately this day is not about just playing sports, but empowering and inspiring young women."
According to the Women's Sports Foundation, which founded National Girls and Women in Sports Day in 1987, NGWSD is a celebration that inspires girls and women to play, be active and to realize their full power. The confidence, strength and character gained through sports participation are the very tools girls and women need to become strong leaders in sports and life.
"The girls were all so enthusiastic and had a lot of fun trying new things. It's so rewarding to get to introduce young girls to the sport I've loved my whole life," said women's gymnastics senior Olivia Imbarlina. "I hope this will lead them to try new things in the future and challenge themselves. It's a blessing to be in a community where we can get involved and mentor young girls and empower them to believe they can be anything they want to be!"
