Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team saw its inaugural season in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference come to an end on Tuesday night at Knights Field, as the third-seeded Purple Knights battled number-six seed Alliance University to a 1-1 double overtime draw, but Alliance advances to the CACC semifinals by taking the penalty kick shootout, 4-3, in in six chances. UB wraps up 2022 with a 10-5-4 overall record, and Alliance moves on with to face Holy Family in the CACC semifinals with a 6-7-3 overall record, as once again the match is a tie on both squads overall records.
After a scoreless first half, Alliance drew first blood in the match 5:56 into the second half when Matteo Guerrini headed home a cross from Javier Plaza.
The host Purple Knights battled back to tie the match and send the contest into overtime when freshman Maximilian Kissel (Wiesbaden, Germany) headed home his team-leading thirteenth goal of the year at the back post off a cross from sophomore Henry Greiner (Munich, Germany).
Neither team could find the back of the net in the 20 extra minutes of play, due in large part to several fine saves from Bridgeport goalkeeper Clement Anet (Grad., Cosse le Vivien, France), as Alliance outshot UB 3-0, in the extra frames. Anet fished with eight saves in the night.
With match officially in the books as a tie, a penalty kick shootout would be used to decide the team to advance.
After trailing 2-1 after three rounds of the shootout, Alliance would convert on their final three attempts, and AU goalkeeper Marco Roessle would stop Bridgeport's final attempt in the sixth round to send his team to the CACC semifinals.
