Men's Soccer Moves To 3-0-0 In Conference Play With 4-0 Road Whitewash Of Dominican College New York
Purple Knights Have Won Four Matches In A Row And Are Now 5-2-1 Overall
Orangeburg, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team picked up its fourth win in a row and remained unbeaten in Central Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Tuesday afternoon with a 4-0 road victory over the host Dominican University New York Chargers. UB is now 5-2-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the CACC. Dominican slips to 1-4-3 overall and 0-3-1 in conference play.
The host Chargers put the pressure on visiting Purple Knights right from the kickoff, but UB goalkeeper Clement Anet (Grad., Cosse le Vivien, France) stopped three point-blank chances in the first eight minutes of play to keep the match scoreless.
Bridgeport would then get on the scoreboard first at the 16:36 mark, when the Purple Knights scored one of the nicest goals so far in 2022 when freshman Maximilian Kissel (Wiesbaden, Germany) headed home his fourth goal of the season at the far the post off a picture-perfect cross from Kevin Martinez (So., Edinburg, Tex.).
The match would remain 1-0 in favor of Bridgeport into the second half, when the Purple Knights would extend their lead to 2-0 when sophomore John Louis (Bridgeport, Conn.) netted his second tally of the season on a breakaway off a feed from graduate student Josef Preci (Savona, Italy).
Dominican had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the 56th minute, but Anet again came up big stopping a Chargers' breakaway to keep his shutout streak intact. Clement, who now has three clean sheets in a row, made a total of six saves on the afternoon to record the shutout.
Bridgeport would put the game away with two goals in the final four minutes of play, as Lucas Sousa (So., Campinas, Brazil) and graduate student Ian Spetnagel (Denver, Colo.) each found the back of the net off assists from sophomore Henry Greiner (Munich, Germany), who now has three assists so far this year. Sousa is now tied with Maximilian Kissel for the team lead in goals with four, and Spetnagel's goal is his first in a UB uniform.
The Purple Knights outshot the Chargers, 18-11, on the day and finished with a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Up next, the UB men's soccer team travels to Delaware on Saturday afternoon looking to run its winning streak to five with a conference contest at Goldey-Beacom University. Game time in the First State is set for 2:30 p.m. and is part of a doubleheader with the Bridgeport women's squad.
