Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team opened its 2022 home schedule on Sunday at Knights Field, and the Purple Knights remained unbeaten in the early going of the season, by playing local rival, the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University, to a 1-1 draw. After the deadlock, both squads are now 1-0-1 on the season.
Sophomore Lucas Sousa (Campinas, Brazil) got the Purple Knights off to quick start in the match by blasting home a free kick from the top of the box just over 29 minutes into play to give UB a 1-0 lead.
The match would remain at 1-0 until just over four minutes into the second half when the hosts were called for a foul in the box, and SCSU's Zico Grovenveld netted the ensuing spot kick to knot things up at 1-1, and that is how the match would end after 90 hard minutes.
Sousa had his team's best chance of the second half when he saw a header smash of the cross bar just under two minutes after the break.
UB's Clement Anet (Grad., Cosse le Vivien, France) made four saves on the evening, and the Owls' Devin Juan made two stops for his side.
Up next, the UB men's soccer team will close out a two-game homestand on Wednesday evening with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference match versus American International College.
