West Haven, Conn.-A goal by freshman Maximilian Kissel (Wiesbaden, Germany) off a beautiful feed from classmate Lucas Mah Basel Switzerland) with just over 20 minutes to play in the match snapped a 1-1 deadlock and lifted the University of Bridgeport men's soccer team to a 2-1 road win over the host University of New Haven Chargers in the 2022 season opener for both team on Thursday night.
The Purple Knights opened the season in fine style scoring just 3:05 into play on Thursday, when senior Jesse Clark (Stratford, Conn.) slammed home a rebound off a shot from graduate student Josef Preci (Savona, Italy) to give UB an early 1-0 lead.
Bridgeport managed to hold that 1-0 advantage until the 61st minute of action when New Haven's Tyler Periera tied things up at 1-1 for the hosts setting up Kissel's game-winning heroics.
The Chargers outshot UB, 13-7, in the match, but Bridgeport goalkeeper Clement Anet (Grad., Cosse le Vivien, France) made a total of six saves, several on point blank shots, to help his team to the season-opening victory.
Up next, the UB men's soccer team will play its 2022 home opener on Sunday at Knights Field, when the Purple Knights open a two-match homestand hosting the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
