UB Makes Two First Half Goals Stand Up Despite Playing Down A Man For Most Of The Match
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team made a pair of first half goals stand up despite playing with only 10 players for the final 71:45 of the match as the Purple Knights opened their 2011 with an impressive 2-0 home shutout victory over number 12 ranked Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday night.
Senior Josh Pellegrini (Vineland, N.J.) opened the scoring in the match when he fired home a score off a pass from junior Jonathan Aristizabal (Medellin, Columbia) 17:47 into the contest.
Less than a minute after opening the scoring, Bridgeport went a man down at the 18:15 mark when senior Devon Thomas (Malabar, Trinidad & Tobago) was shown a red card.
Playing shorthanded did not seem to faze the host Purple Knights as they increased their lead to 2-0 at the 38:24 mark when junior Lee Middleton (Newcastle, England), who also played a fine game on the UB backline, flicked home another assist from Aristizabal.
Junior goalkeeper Danny Hernandez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) was strong in the net for Bridgeport making seven saves to record a clean sheet in the season's first match.
Bridgeport is back in action on Thursday, September 8 when the team travels to Franklin Pierce University. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
