Hannes Nilsson Earns Third Team National NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Academic All-America Honors Selected By CoSIDA
Senior Acknowledged For His Excellence In The Classroom And On The Field
Bridgeport, Conn.-University of Bridgeport men's soccer standout Hannes Nilsson (Sr., Tors, Sweden) has been honored for his outstanding play on the field and his top-notch efforts in the classroom with his selection as a national CoSIDA Academic All-America, earning a spot on the 2021 Third Team National NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Academic All-America squad selected by CoSIDA (The College Sports Information Directors Association of America).
Nilsson, who received the 2021 East Coast Conference's Elite 19 Award for men's soccer recognizing the student-athlete with the top grade point average on any of the teams participating in the conference championship tournament in their sport, has a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a Mathematics major. He scored four goals, all game winners, for the Purple Knights this season and added one assist for nine total points.
To be nominated as a CoSIDA Academic All-America, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution.
Hannes' selection marks the 15th all-time national Academic All-America team member, and the 14th since 2012, selected from the University of Bridgeport joining softball's Cathleen Meade (Second Team in 1993), women's soccer's Julia Hansson (Second Team in 2012 and First Team in 2013), women's soccer's Tabea Rauschenberg (Second Team in 2014), men's swimming Ruben Jimenez (First Team and National Division II Men's At-Large Academic All-America of the Year in 2014 and 2015), men's swimming Oscar Pereira (Second Team in 2014), women's volleyball Ying Shen (Third Team in 2014), women's soccer Nicola Worthington (Second Team in 2016). women's gymnastics Christine Liautaud (Third Team in 2016), women's swimming Annagrazia Bonsanti (Second Team Women's At-Large in 2018), Maegan Doyle and teammate Jennifer Wendelius, who earned First and Second Team honors for women's soccer in 2018, plus Doyle earned Second Team honors in 2019. Earlier this year, softball's Kaira Ramon earned a spot on the national Third Team for her sport.
