Purple Knights Punch Ticket To ECC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament With 3-0 Win Over Staten Island
Bridgeport Will Face Top-Seeded St. Thomas Aquinas On Wednesday Afternoon At STAC
Staten Island, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team punched its ticket to the 2021 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 road win over the host College of Staten Island Dolphins. The victory moves the Purple Knights' overall season record to 5-6-5, and they finish with a 5-2-2 conference mark and take the fourth and final spot in this season's ECC Championship tourney. UB, Molloy and Mercy all finished with 17 points in the conference standings, but Mercy does not advance via the ECC's tie-breaking system, and Molloy takes the third seed in the ECC Championship by virtue of a win over Bridgeport earlier in the season. The Purple Knights will now travel to face top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas College this Wednesday, November 10 at 1:30 p.m. in Sparkill, New York. Second-seed the University of the District of Columbia will take on third-seeded Molloy in Wednesday's other ECC semifinal. Wednesday's winners will then meet on Saturday to decide the 2021 ECC Men's Soccer Champion.
On Saturday, the Purple Knights struck quickly on offense as senior Hannes Nilsson (Tors, Sweden) fired home his fourth goal of the year, all of which are game winners, just 8:30 into the first half.
Sophomore Ozar Razo (Hidalgo, Tex.) gave UB a 2-0 lead heading into halftime when he scored his first career goal off an assist from junior Chigozie Okorie (Houston, Tex.) a little over six minutes before the break.
Senior Jesse Clark (Stratford, Conn.) put the nail in the host Dolphins' coffin when he scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season from a penalty kick in the 59th minute.
UB graduate student goalkeeper Clement Anet (Cosse le Vivien, France) made three saves to pick up his fifth solo clean sheet of the season and help propel his team into the ECC Championship Tournament.
Bridgeport outshot CSI, 12-7, on the day,
Staten Island finishes its season with a 3-12-2 overall record and a 1-7-1 conference mark.
