Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team stayed right in the thick of the race for places and positioning in the East Coast Conference Championship Postseason Tournament with a 2-0 home win over the visiting Daemen College Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at Knights Field. With the victory, the Purple Knights are now 4-2-0 in the ECC and 4-6-2 overall, Daemen slips to 1-5-0 in conference play, and the Wildcats are 3-8-0 overall.
Bridgeport opened the scoring 27:28 into play when senior Hannes Nilsson (Tors, Sweden) put home his third goal of the season off his own rebound following a feed from freshman John Louis (Bridgeport, Conn.).
The score would stay 1-0 into the second half when freshman Lucas Sousa (Campinas, Brazil) doubled the UB advantage when her rocketed home a volley just under the crossbar off an assist from junior Chigozie Okorie (Houston, Tex.). Sousa now has two goals so far in 2021.
The Purple Knights dominated possession on Saturday, as they took a total of 17 shots to only six for the Wildcats. Bridgeport also held a 7-2 advantage in corners in the match.
Graduate student goalkeeper Clement Anet (Cosse le Vivien, France) made one stop to record his third shutout of the season and number four for the team so far this season.
Up next, the UB men's soccer team continues its four-match homestand with its final non-conference game of the season, as the Purple Knights host Georgian Court University on Wednesday night. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m.
