Rockville Centre, N.Y.-The host Molloy College Lions scored the game-winning goal with just 2:41 remaining in the second overtime to pick up a 2-1 East Coast Conference men's soccer win over the visiting University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on Long Island on Saturday afternoon. UB is now 9-5-1 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play. Molloy moves to 10-5-1 overall, and the Lions are 4-3-0 in the ECC.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes of action, the host squad scored first at the 69:01 of play, and the match remain 1-0 in favor of the Lions until UB sophomore Jonas Schmelcher (Berlin, Germany) netted his first goal of 2019 when he connected off a corner kick from classmate Oscar Facey (Trangsund, Sweden) with 8:09 remaining in regulation time.
Neither team scored in the first overtime and it looked like the match was headed for draw until Molloy's Paul Morales scored the game-winner late in the period.
Bridgeport dominated the shot total on Saturday holding a 23-11 advantage over the Lions, but Molloy goalkeeper Dennis Mejia made a total of 10 saves to keep his team in the match. UB sophomore Carlos Tofern (Hamburg, Germany) made four saves for the Purple Knights.
Up next, the UB men's soccer team will close out the 2019 regular season schedule at home next Saturday at 11:00 a.m. versus Roberts Wesleyan College. A win over the Redhawks will guarantee the Purple Knights at least the second seed in the East Coast Conference Championship Tournament.
