Bridgeport, Conn.-For the second straight match, the University of Bridgeport men's soccer team battled an East Coast Conference opponent to a 2-2 double overtime deadlock, as the Purple Knights opened a six-match homestand on Wednesday night with a draw against the visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans. With the tie, UB is now 0-8-2 overall and 0-2-2 in conference play. STAC is now 7-2-3 overall and 3-1-2 in the ECC.
After the Spartans scored the only fisrt half goal in Wednesday's match just 3:14 into play, the Purple Knights came back with goals from freshmen Yoel Salvador (Bridgeport, Conn.) just 2:41 into the second half off and assist from junior Femi Coker (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Jake Atkinson (Stamford, Conn.), his second of the season, off an assist from Salvador to grab a 2-1 lead with just over 22 minutes to play in regulation.
Unfortunately for UB fans, the Spartans tied the game at 2-2 with 5:07 to play in regulation when Luis Morales converted a penalty kick after a Purple Knights' foul in the box for his second goal of the match.
Niether team could find the back of the net the rest of the way, including the 20 minutes of extra time, so the match ended in a 2-2 tie.
UB senior goalkeeper Fabio Junior (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) made four saves in the match, as did STAC netminder Jack Nicholson.
Up next, UB men's soccer team takes the field for Homecoming this Saturday, October 15th where they host ECC rival Molloy College. Game time is set for 12 noon.
