Bridgeport, Conn.-Junior Jay Abreu (Palmas, Brazil) scored a first half goal and added a second half assist on a beautiful corner kick service to help the University of Bridgeport men's soccer team to a 2-0 home win over local rival, the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday night. With the victory, UB is now 4-1-0 on the season. SCSU slips to an even 2-2-0 in the early going of 2015.
Abreu got the Purple Knights on the scoreboard with 6:31 to play in the first half when he scored his first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Lazar Baresic (Belgrade, Serbia).
Bridgeport extended its lead to 2-0, the final score in the contest, just 4:54 into the second half when junior Rafael Torres (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) headed home his first tally of the year when Abreu's corner kick found him at the back post.
UB goalkeeper Fabio Junior (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) made two saves to record the shutout and his first win of the season. The Purple Knights have blanked the opposition in all four of their wins so far in 2015.
SCSU goalkeeper Noah Varonier also made two stop on the night, as Bridgeport outshot the Owls by a slim 10-9 margin over the 90 minutes.
Up next, the UB men's soccer team will open East Coast Conference play on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. when the Mercy College Mavericks will come to Knights Field.
