Four Purple Knights Earn Weekly East Coast Conference Awards
Women's Soccer's Puddefoot & Occhipinti. Men's Soccer's Haakansson And Women's Volleyball's Savic Recognized By The ECC
Central Islip, N.Y.-Four University of Bridgeport student-athletes have been honored by the East Coast Conference with Player of the Week Awards for their outstanding play during the week of October 27 through November 2, 2014. From women's soccer, senior forward Danielle Puddefoot (Slough, England) was named ECC Player of the Week and freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin Occhipinti (Islip, N.Y.) was chosen ECC Rookie of the Week. From men's soccer, freshman Simon Haakansson (Stockholm, Sweden) earned conference Rookie of the Week accolades, and from women's volleyball, Biljana Savic (Grad. Student, Novi Sad, Serbia) was named ECC Player of the Week for the third time so far in 2014.
Puddefoot closed out the 2014 regular season with a bang helping Bridgeport go 3-0 on the week to gain the final spot in this season's ECC Championship Tournament by notching 13 points on five goals and three assists. In a non-conference win over Philadelphia U. on Monday, Danielle had a goal and an assist. She followed that up with a hat trick plus two helpers versus St. Thomas Aquinas and finally a goal in Saturday's regular season finale against Molloy.
Occhipinti posted 250:27 of clean sheet soccer in net for the University of Bridgeport on the week as the Purple Knights went a perfect 3-0. Kaitlin posted solo shutouts against Philadelphia University and Molloy and shared one versus St. Thomas Aquinas. So far in 2014, she has posted eight solo shutouts and shared three others.
Haakansson wrapped up a fine first season in a UB uniform with a five-point week with two goals and one assist, as he helped the Purple Knights go 1-0-1. In a 3-1 win over St. Thomas Aquinas, Simon scored a goal and had an assist, and in a 1-1 deadlock with Molloy, he netted his team's only goal. Haakansson finished 2014 as Bridgeport's leading scorer with 12 points on a team-high five goals with two assists.
Savic again showed her all-around talents helping Bridgeport go 2-0 on the week averaging 2.62 kills, 2.50 digs, 5.88 assists and 0.50 blocks per set. In Tuesday five-set road win over LIU Post, Biljana notched a triple-double with 12 kills, 34 assists and 11 digs, and she was just shy of another triple double in a 3-0 sweep of Mercy with nine kills, 13 assists and nine digs. For good measure, she also had a total of nine service aces in the two matches last week.
